Sliding Memories

This series is built around crafting, physically manipulating photographs by cutting into them and writing across them. Working with images from my past, some that I appear in and others I took myself, helped me feel more connected to the memories they held. The handwritten text comes from old diaries and notebooks, fragments of things I wrote to myself over the past several years.

After cutting and writing on each photograph, I paired images that related to one another, either in content or visually, and mounted them on two sliding plexiglass plates, one able to move horizontally over the other. Where the top image is cut away, the image beneath shows through, so a new, third image forms from the combination of the two. The viewer decides how far to slide the upper plate left or right, and in doing so, creates their own version of the image.
