Iranian House

In everyday dialect, a house means an area that belongs to a family.  A home is a safe place to rest, live and relax.  This place is usually inhabited by an individual or a family and they keep their belongings in it.  In traditional and popular Iranian culture, sometimes the terms “four-wall or home” are used instead of house.

There are certain elements and behaviors which are part of the Iranian culture and where they are found is in Iranian people’s home. That is why these photos were taken at my grandparents’ house, where there is more tradition than my own home. After the project was done, I decided to engage the people who are in the pictures (my family members) in the process of presenting the work. I asked them to look at the photos and talk about them. Meanwhile, I recorded their voices. At the end, I merged them into one single audio file and put a headphone next to the photos (which were on the wall) so the viewers could listen to it while looking at the collection. This way, they would stay longer in front of the pictures and were interested in making a connection between what they were hearing and what they were looking at.
